Under Strange Moons 02/03/22

The trees give way down the hill to a creek, falling down to the river. Their shadows fall, today, well clear of the water, which sparkles in the starlight. Rocks litter the waters, in some places seeming to deflect them. Slides from the slope above. Some, as this one, suited almost willfully to being sat upon, with one's feet in the water, cool from the ground, unlike the air. The trees drape a curtain, creating a hallway through nature itself. An undergrowth of mysteria hidden from the creek, the rocks, by inches and seconds. A wall between the exposed and the vulnerable.

The Moon creeps above the far tree line. It casts new light in saw teeth cutting down the hillside. The light dances in the tiny rapids of the creek, and they gurgle with renewed glee, erupting ribbons of second hand moon light to paint the rocks. Time washes down the river below us, lost from us both, of me in the back seat, on the highway, speeding past lamp posts in a dark more black for the light they cast on some. The moon tipping over the pointed tips of so many trees, scurrying past in waves. "I see you", I say to the moon, but it slips away in the river between us.

Our conversations are rarely so fruitful, this time only the speeding waters to bring silence in our words. The curtains call, a wind swept howl. I steady myself and draw out my senses to encompass the mountain. Speak to me and I will work to hear. The ribbons dance, and chart a voyage, of highways past, sidestreets future. Time slips in the reflection of the moon, the haze of stars.

The lines slip by under wheels and hours, hidden in darkness greater for the headlights bright. The moon on the horizon, the highway between us, an inaccurate map. The call be heard I heed and head, to where, I only trust. Journeys start and end in the faith to set foot. If I loose my path, there will be another night sky, in the star light, by a creek, up hill from the river of time.
